The goal of this course is to train healthcare professionals to provide high quality both single-rescuer and multi-rescuer adult and pediatric basic life support skills for application in both in- and pre-hospital settings (including AED), universal First Aid. In addition, the course will prepare students to recognize the risks associated with exposure to blood and other potential infectious materials as well as to identify standard actions in case of post-accidental exposure.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Recognize several life-threatening emergencies
- Describe the importance of CPR and its impact on survival
- Understand the steps of the AHA Chain of Survival
- Understand the steps for delivering effective ventilation by using barrier device
- Describe how to perform adult, child and infant CPR both in single and multi-rescuer settings
- Describe the steps of timely and safe use of AED
- Describe the steps for relieving foreign-body airway obstruction for adults and infants
- Understand the components of First Aid Kit
- Assess and provide first aid care to victims with bleeding, wounds, schock, and burns
- Assess and provide first aid care to victims with poisoning or allergic reactions
- Assess and provide first aid care to victims with exposure to extreme temperatures (heat and cold)
- Assess and provide first aid care to victims with head, spine, musculoskeletal as well as eye injuries
- Define bloodborne pathogen
- Describe the chain of infection of bloodborne diseases
- Describe four ways exposure to bloodborne pathogens commonly occurs.
- Identify the key components of the Exposure Control Plan
- Understand the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to limit the spread of bloodborne pathogens
- Identify strategies to prevent occupational exposures to bloodborne pathogens
- Undestand post-accidental exposure protocol according to OSHA requirements
